It was lubuntu 15.10 desktop AMD64. It was a DVD-R! I assumed it was a
CD-R, but no it is a DVD-R I had knocking around from previous installs.

Wiping the hard disc is done as a courtesy to whoever passed on the
hardware. Sometimes I even have to copy the existing data files etc to
optical disc as a favour before wiping the hard disc. I even have
LibreOffice Draw template files so their files can go into a nice, printed
case for the disc.
1GB RAM and that processor should not cause any issues for install.

Well, I made two attempts at installing with the option to download newer
files during the install. Both times it failed whilst "Configuring
timezone" and the crash dialogue stated that it was sending crash data to
Canonical. I then tried doing the install without installing newer files
and the install worked. Also, I haven't checked the PC to see how much RAM
the graphics subsystem has grabbed.
