2nd half report of

Ubuntu Korea Loco Team

Hello, I’m a Korea Loco Team Contactor, Jung-min Kim.

It’s already 2016! Last year, in 2015, Korea Loco Team has done a lot of
work. We held the

conference with corporations, seminar, several projects and study groups,
and an Open

Source application contest with the university.

1. 10th Anniversary Seminary & Alliance Seminar with Microsoft Korea and
Samsung

On September 19th, we held the special seminar with Microsoft Korea. From
the Ubuntu

Loco Team, 『tutorial of development using Ubuntu for Beginner』, 『Internet
Banking in

Korea』, 『Fortran』 sessions and from Microsoft Korea, 『ASP .NET on Ubuntu,
『War of IT』

sessions are done. A total of 80 audiences from all around the country
joined our seminar

with passion. Also, we had a live streaming channel on YouTube for this
seminar, and over

80 people watched our seminar with streaming service.

On October 27th to 28th, Korea Loco Team got invited to Samsung Open Source

Conference, SOSCON. The first day, we opened a booth for an Ubuntu
promotion, and we

gave out to attendees Ubuntu T-shirts, stickers, and notes we made. The
second day, a

few members of the Korea Loco Team were able to hold a session and talked
about things

about Open Source and Ubuntu, with themes such as 『Ceph Storage 』, 『Open
Source for

job applicants』. This SOSCON’s attendee was over a thousand people, and
finished with

success.

On December 19th, we held an End-of-the-Year party with community members
while

celebrating 10th anniversary of Korea Loco Team. Even though we were
confirmed by the

Loco Council Meeting on February 24th, 2009, the very first record of
Ubuntu Korea

Community was from December 23rd 2005, so we decided to celebrate it! To
make the

10th anniversary seminar special, we reserved a restaurant and had a dinner
together.

Also, we had a midterm presentation of one of our study, 『Learning
Algorithm using

Python』.

2. Open Source Application Contest with University

The Korea Loco Team held a contest with Kook-Min University. The Contest’s
name is

『 Ubuntu Korea Community & Kook-Min University, Open Soruce Application
Contest』, and

the theme was the lunch menu application, which shows a today’s lunch menu
at school

for students. The purpose of this contest was to encourage students to
participate in open

source projects, with no repulsion. This contest, however, is proposed by
the Professor

Min-Suck Kim of the Kook-Min University. Just to inform you, Kook-Min
University is theonly university to have an Open Source class as an
official curriculum in Korea. Submitted

source codes are committed to GitHub and was opened as an Open Source
project. An

Evaluation was made by the Ubuntu Korea Community’s members, and the
evaluated

items were quality of code, Open Source usage, and a UI/UX, for a month.
After a month,

3 projects were selected and rewarded with ₩500,000, ₩300,000, and ₩200,000
to first

to third prize winners on December 1st 2015. After the contest, we got a
pretty good

feedback from both participates and Ubuntu Korea Community people, and
we’re planning

to hold next contest with more Ubuntu related theme.

3. Supporting variety projects.

>From the summer of 2015, Korea Loco Team members started a project, called
“Cobuntu

Config”. It’s a project which gathered a Ubuntu configuration for Korean.
It was proposed

by one of our community members, Min-Young Go, getting idea from
raspberry-config

while he was working on Raspberry Pi study. The “Cobuntu Config’ project is
currently

developed by the shell script.

After finishing a “Cobuntu Config” project, we started a “Contribute
Project”

4. Managing and running variety study groups

>From December 2014, starting with Android Study, we managed several study
groups with

support from NIPA (National IT Industry Promotion Agency) and Naver D2
Program.

Studies are, “QT”, “PyQT”, “RaspberryPi”, “RaspberryPi & Basics of
Circuit”, “Algorithm

with Python”, and “Building websites using Ubuntu & AWS”. In 2016, we’re
planning to

manage and support more study groups with IOT Technology, and Developing
Tools in

Ubuntu Environment.

Well, this is pretty much for what we have done in 2015. We always thank
you for your

support and attention, and will do our best to spread the “Open Source
mind” and Ubuntu

in Korea.

Thank you again, and a Happy New Year!

From

Jung-min Kim & Tae-hee Jang, Korea Loco Team Leader.
