I agree - a better header would be good if we can make it work without
adding too much cruft.

Note that every message to a list like this that is managed with
mailman contains this mail header:

List-Unsubscribe: <https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/loco-contacts>,
        <mailto:loco-contacts-request at lists.ubuntu.com?subject=unsubscribe>

listing two ways to unsubscribe. You need your password for the web
site in the first case. In the second case you'll send mail and get
an automated response for confirmation.

Would this be helpful in the footer?

 unsubscribe: mailto:loco-contacts-request at lists.ubuntu.com?subject=unsubscribe

Do common mail user agents make that clickable? Is it too long for
one line?

If it works, I'd drop the part of the footer that contains the
mail address of the list and replace it with the unsubscribe line:

From
 loco-contacts mailing list
 loco-contacts at lists.ubuntu.com
 https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/loco-contacts

to
 loco-contacts mailing list
 unsubscribe: mailto:loco-contacts-request at lists.ubuntu.com?subject=unsubscribe
 https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/loco-contacts
