Hello people!
The Nicaraguan LoCo Team participated in the biggest free software/open
source event in Latin America, FLISOL, the Latin American Free Software
Installfest 2007 that was held on April 28 simultaneously in 17 countries
and 160 cities in Latin America.
Ubuntu-ni was one of the organizers of the event in Nicaragua together with
the Nicaraguan Free Software and Open Source Network. We had two huge events
on this day in the capital city Managua and in the city of León (90 kms.
from Managua). Some highlights of FLISOL Nicaragua 2007:
- Aprox. 4,000 people assisted to both events
- 17 conferences, 6 of them 100% Ubuntu related
- 46 desktops and laptops got Ubuntu/Kubuntu installed
- 500 CDs of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu were handed out, 90% of them locally
produced
- An unknown number of laptops got upgraded from Edgy to Feisty
The University of Managua in León (UdeM) announced on the event that they
are going to migrate all their Windows systems to Ubuntu (+400 computers),
including servers and workstation. This project is going to be coordinated
with the Ubuntu-ni local group in the university. Four other universities
are also interested in Ubuntu. One of them have already migrated a whole
department (public relations) to Ubuntu on the workstations and their
servers to Debian.
Datatex, one of the three biggest PC vendors in Nicaragua is exploring the
possibility to sell computers with Ubuntu preinstalled. The Ubuntu-ni Team
will provide training and local support. A few government agencies also
contacted the Team and we will be meeting with the representatives of the
Ministry of Governance, the Ministry of Defense and the Social Security
Institute next week in order to advice them on the migration of their
systems to Ubuntu.
All in all, it has been a great day for the free software community in
Nicaragua and specially for the Ubuntu-ni LoCo Team. We got a huge media
attention with interviews in local TV and radio stations and several
articles on the local newspapers.
We are really happy and proud of all this, it has been our first big event
and we showed that the Nicaraguan Ubuntu Community really rocks! Upcoming
events for the team are the three month long Linux Tour Nicaragua 2007 and
the Software Freedom Day in September.
