Please close all audio applications (so ``lsof /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/*''
returns no process ids), and do the following:
1) Unload the module listed in /proc/asound/cards. I suspect it's
snd_intel8x0, so: sudo modprobe -r snd_intel8x0
2) Next pass the headphone quirk to modprobe:
sudo modprobe snd_intel8x0 ac97_quirk=hp_only
Please report whether this change allows the proper volume control to
function.
