hp pavilion ze2397ea - ati radeon xpress 200m and amd64

Hi,

I bought an hp pavilion ze2397ea two weeks ago, and installed Ubuntu 5.10.
I'm still unable to get the Xwindows started. After browsing some forums I
found out that there have been some problems with the Ati driver for this
card and this processor. However,  Bugzilla says that the problems have been
solved, so I think I'm doing something wrong (I'm a newbie). This is what
I've done:

apt-get update
apt-get install fglrx
dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver

After that, I select my screen resolution, and I do not select using
framebuffer.

I tried the Vesa drivers and they worked just once. After that, I could log
in and after ten seconds appeared a warning message and the Xwindows were
automatically turned off.

Any help??
