Question on how to access the lights on my laptop....

I have found
/proc/acpi/asus/wled
and
/proc/acpi/asus/mled.

When I try to change the values on the wled the led shuts off and the
wireless does too.
Is there a way to turn on and off those led lights without turning on
and off the wireless?
The reason I say is I want to create a plugin for pidgin similar to the
think light plug in.  It blinks the light when there is a message.
I could make others programs to do similar... for example for new email.

Any ideas?
