I don't know how though. I messed around with the settings making it go through the built-in Audio and then back to the setting as shown in the screenshot then used the speaker jack and connected it to the analogue audio in and.... It worked! Most all will support audio output using the hdmi, but a few may require the non-free proprietary drivers (nvidia and amd). With the cable plugged in, check out System Settings >> Multimedia, and check that the hdmi output is visible, and is moved to the top of the list in the appropriate sections. Another thing to try to test (assuming that hdmi audio is available and present) is, when playing a video or audio piece, is to click on your kmix icon in the system tray.
