Hi,
This happened quiete often with dev version (14.04 is for april).
I have a nvidia card because I stop with intel and ATI with ubuntu,
maybe you should desinstall intel drivers and use xorg (by default)
when no proprietary drivers.
Try to start in recovery mode (second option in start menu grub) and
then enter the shell as root or sudo
Try startx to see if your X is working.
I am not an expert with this everytime I got it, I have to
reinstall, but after googling sometimes I success. Update have
broken files too and after another update it's corrected.
So good luck
a upgrade to 14.04 and i get broken packets. The videocard is

The last upgrade didn't also work because of a black screen.
I did do some terminal commands, after the start is now
stopped by 'Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ OK ]

I have an nVIdia card and the last time that happened I had to
manually load all card drivers. It seems that the upgrade only
upgraded one, or two, of the necessary files and the remaining
non-upgraded files did not play well with the upgraded ones
(mismatch).
You might try upgrading all the necessary video drivers.
sudo apt-get install "filex" "filex" "filex" (replace "filex"
with the actual filename, no quotes)
That did the trick for me, hope it does the same for you.
Good luck!
