Neither recommendation made any difference. Looks like, so far, I may have to do the radical thing and do a complete wipe and install. This one of those situations that make linux look like Window$. Shame that no one can get it right. Upgrades are definitely discouraged in kubuntu. The watchword is wipe out all your work and programs and start all over again. I know that saving the $HOME$ directory should preserve a lot, but it really is never the same. Thank you!
