<pre wrap="">I'm currently using Kubuntu Feisty (7.04, ext3) as 'production'
distro. It resides as logical /dev/hda7 in the extended partition of
my only hdd. It runs quite well except for the synaptic package
manager, which steadfastly refuses to install things (like e.g.mysql
or speedcrunch) because of dependency considerations (it issues 'Not
Authenticated' warnings).

<pre wrap="">Did you change the repositories to the new location? 7.04 is no longer
supported but you find the standard Ubuntu repositories now at

I'm now going to change the repos to the web address you just indicated and
will let you know how synaptic behaves after that.
With regard to /dev/hda3 I'm now proceeding as you suggested.
'sudo mount /media/hda3' worked just fine.
Here's the new output from 'df -h':
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda7 12G 8.9G 2.0G 83% /
varrun 252M 96K 252M 1% /var/run
varlock 252M 0 252M 0% /var/lock
procbususb 252M 116K 252M 1% /proc/bus/usb
udev 252M 116K 252M 1% /dev
devshm 252M 0 252M 0% /dev/shm
lrm 252M 33M 219M 14% /lib/modules/2.6.20-17-generic/volatile
/dev/hda1 12G 11G 1.8G 86% /media/hda1
<font color="#3333ff">/dev/hda3 12G 4.7G 6.5G 42% /media/hda3 (oh, miracle!)</font>
/dev/hda4 1.1G 65M 943M 7% /media/hda4
/dev/hda5 1.1G 8.0K 1.0G 1% /media/hda5
(it is indeed much more orderly/readable than the earlier 'df --all'!)
/media/hda3's contents are now also fully visible in Krusader, which until now showed it as empty.
I've also removed the 'noauto' option from the /dev/hda3 entry in /etc/fstab.
Now I will reboot to see whether the device gets auto-mounted properly.
A screenshot at <a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E"
href="http://picpaste.com/jdh_partitions_20090909.png"><http://picpaste.com/jdh_partitions_20090909.png></a>
displays the layout of partitions on my 40 GB harddisk.
I do need to provide more space for the current Feisty on /dev/hda7 and
would also like to empty /dev/hda3 to make room for a test-install of Kubuntu 8.04.
May I turn to you for advice on the possibilities, if any, of
reshuffling the partitions?
For now, I'm really grateful for the help you've provided thus far;
I've learned some important things as a result of it.
john
