not understood is where $PATH and other environment variables are set
for both specific users and all users when logging on...have looked in
/etc, the "." files in ~ and can't find in doc...as i recall in older
unix environments there were ".xxxrc" files where environment variable
were set, type of shell determined etc...Is there an analog in Kubuntu?<br>

You just want to execute a shell script when you start your session?
Try putting the filename in .bashrc , which should be in your home
directory.
