I'm fairly new to Linux, and very new to Kubuntu, and have an issue I hope
someone can help me with:<br>
I am using a dial-up connection, with <a href="http://Tesco.net">Tesco.net</a>.
I can setup the connection with pppconfig fine, so pon/poff works. I would like
to be able to see some sort of indication of my transfer speed so when I use
apt-get or K[insert pagake manager name here, I forget what it is!] I check
that it is infact downloading the packages. I have read about a program called
ModemLights that works with pon/poff. Is this available via apt-get. I have
tried configuring kppp, but it refuses (an error with pppd, I don't understand
why). If anyone knows of a tutorial somewhere I can read to configure kppp
properly, that would be a suitable route for me!<br>

KPPP. 1<sup>st</sup> and foremost, check your /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options
file. Uncomment the noauth option. The error message you are getting is
probably KPPP trying to authorize your internet connection. Most internet
services, at least in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">US</st1:place></st1:country-region>,
do not authenticate. A few other options that has helped me were the following
options:<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

replace the default Ethernet internet route with the dialup one. This is
especially handy if you are going to use static name servers.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

/etc/resolv.conf getting overwritten after about 2-5 minutes which kills any
nameserver you are using for your ISP.. Search the forums and there is an
answer to this little annoyance.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
