I did one more test last night, updating all the way from a working
beta, and the next reboot gave me bad boot, throwing me into the
(initramfs) prompt.

The virtualbox image seems to be working though, so it's something onthe
hardware. This is a Thinkpad T530, so I'm going to try it on my T480.

I always grab the iso from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/focal-desktop-amd64.iso
and the beta I took from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/20.04/beta/kubuntu-20.04-beta-desktop-amd64.iso

Both I'm afraid. The beta updated via Discover, and that daily booting
straight into the initramfs prompt.
