17.10 font hinting broken?

Why oh why the bugs with font rendering are *never* fixed?
Just upgraded to 19.10 and, again, the ugly fonts are back.
Luckily enough I remembered this thread and fixed it (until next time).
Maybe everybody likes blurry fonts nowadays and doesn't care about 
proper hinting.
Firefox and Thunderbird menus are still using the wrong font/hinting 
though :-(
