What gpu is this, and what monitor or system is it? In the live session, only the free drivers are available, so it is possible that only the screen's native resolution is available, or it can't properly detect the screen's resolution options. Now, if you were to install 16.04, on higher res monitors and TVs, the 1920x1080 is the best resolution, but of course the ui and fonts will all be tiny. To get better size, you don't change the resolution, you change settings for font dpi and screen scaling, as described in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kz2E5Xy5tw Unfortunately, these changes do require a logout for them to take effect, which is problematic on a live session :) Clay Weber From kbun at xpresso.seaslug.org Sat Jan 20 07:30:04 2018 From: kbun at xpresso.seaslug.org (Bill Vance) Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2018 23:30:04 -0800 (PST) Subject: Screen Res problem in 16.04 In-Reply-To: <1cad11e24513f166b04cbf62b366aa00.squirrel@claydoh.com> References: <1cad11e24513f166b04cbf62b366aa00.squirrel@claydoh.com> Message-ID: On Fri, 19 Jan 2018, Clay Weber wrote: > On Fri, January 19, 2018 11:20 am, Bill Vance wrote: >> > >> >> Ok, I'm checking out the try it and see portion of a >> 16.04 install DVD. The monitor us a hanns-g, and measures apx. 21"X11". According to system settings, I'm using 1920X1080, auto refresh, but available screen space is huge compared to what is physically available, which leaves me _lots_ of room for multi-windows worth of stuff. That's 6 terminal/ program windows per workspace, 3 across, 2 vertical, 8 workspaces. Each terminal fills the physical screen, and I navigate between it, and the other 5 by moving the mouse around. I like a system with _lots_ of room for multiple projects. This is, of course, _NOT_ what I'm seeing with the live session. Any guess as to What scaling/dpi might be good to start with? The other two items, (in System Settings), do not exist in the live session. Are they both there after install, or like one of them, requiring update-upgrade before they are both fully there, and functional, or what? Par for the course, I guess. One of the problems is that firefox can't find its, ".o/.o.so", files with both hands. So where are, "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkdeinit5_firefox.o", and, "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkdeinit5_firefox.o.so"? Firefox can't be launched without them. As an attempt to work around this, I did an, "apt-get install links", used it to go out to http://www.mozilla.com, and downloaded their latest/ greatest version. This appears to be a working version, but it has the same problem with text as I had with the OS install, I.e., you need an electron microscope just to read it. No apparent, or obvious fix of any sort. Any help with either problem greatly appreciated. Bill From jamparm at gmail.com Wed Jan 24 21:03:53 2018 From: jamparm at gmail.com (James L. If I haven't replied to anything in the last, couuple. that's why. Got the teensy text problem _mostly_ fixed but not completely. Most notably with firefox, which is a whole number of problems all by itself. The basic version that comes, "in the box", couldn't find it's, ".o/.o.so", files with both hands, and so, wouldn't launch. I finally did an, "apt-get install reinstall firefox", and got a working version of the latest firefox. Funny thing, it didn't replace the original menu firefox, which still doesn't work, but the new one only works from the command line. When exiting, it leaves behind numerous messages about not hooking up to dbus properly. I could probably live with that if I could just get the text size right on it. After it finishes, apt-get has been giving me a rather arcane message: W: No sandbox user '_apt' on the system, can not drop privileges Whatever that's supposed to mean. For it's finalle, 16.04 brought up some ancient history. When doing the semi-obligatory post apt-get download re-boot, I'm without warning, left looking at a blank screen, waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Finally I do a three key, (Ctrl-Alt-F1), get a login prompt, log in, and type, "startx" , and the system finally starts up. Something I haven't had to do since Caldera Linux folded up it's tent, and vanished. Any help on the above, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, > > James... > > Well, James, I think you have made a BIG mistake. Synaptic is a real useful app. It allows you to find and install a whole galaxy of programs (apps) that you will find useful while you explore and use your Linux system. And KDE 5.x is quite similar to Windows in the way it works. If you like to put icons on screen to help you jump right into an application, you can do that, or if you don't, you can use the Application Menu in the lower left corner of the screen, where Windows has the Start icon. (FYI: Linux users like to call the screen the "desktop"--maybe that's a Microsoft word, I don't know. The "tray" or "systray" (which is usually along the bottom edge of the screen in KDE) is usually called the "panel" in Linux. What to do after a fresh install, you seem to have done: you got all the updates. After that, what you do is find programs that let you do whatever you used to do with Windows. There are certainly Linux routines that copy the same kind of routines that you used in Windows--sometimes better! You'll find almost all of them in your Synaptic, once you have reinstalled it! (Since you no longer have it, try sudo apt-get install synaptic--I hope that works.) --doug -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is easy enough to ask here or in the forums or irc chat channel. Actually, if things are working well for you, then there is no need to worry about PPAs or anything like that. These are nice upgrades but are totally optional. As to setting things up, what are you looking to do? There really is very little to do in this area other than personalization you might want. While Synaptic is a great tool, you highlight a reason why Discover is the default software manager. There are a great number of packages that a normal desktop user will never need to see, such as all the system libraries, -dev packages, and the like. Discover focuses mainly on software, not the unseen bits, so it is just fine for many people. As you are already trying out the terminal, you may soon discover that you like this method over a GUI tool. (NOTE: when using the commandline to update, use the correct 'sudo apt full-upgrade' or 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' command as these will install *all* updates and required additions, whereas 'apt-get upgrade' does not. Confusing at first, but true.) I also recommend Synaptic over the standard KDE package management. I find that he KDE package management can't find all that's available. Just type what your looking for into the search box. Want graphics, type graphics. You don't need to know a name. Just what you want. What you do from this point depends on what you want to do with your computer. Me, I do genealogy and related web sites. Also some history . Towards that end I use Bluefish as a web page editor. There's another helper called Cssed to edit cascading style sheets. Unfortunately KDE/Kubuntu doesn't support it but Debian does so I use it from there. I also find KDE's FTP program to be somewhat less than what I want so I use Gftp from the Gnome desktop. The whole point here is that you have all the choices. You know what you want to use your computer for and you can find and use whatever works best for you. -- "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes-and ships-and sealing-wax- Of cabbages-and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot- And whether pigs have wings." As you may already know, the spelling and English wasn't too good in those days, I loved reading the last "Wills and Testamates" of the old farmers who left items to their Families and trying to cypher their mispelled words...! Very interesting reading..! We found or had 420 records in our Family Tree..! One of us was a horse theif, he got caught, the prisons here were full so they sent him to Australia via ship to serve his time there. He stayed there and raised a family. At earlier versions of Kubuntu, I could quite easily access the SD card and internal memory in my Android phones. I connected a USB cable in between the phone and laptop and the phone showed up as a "mass storage" device, after which I could easily transfer files between either devices. However, ever since let's say Kubuntu 14.04 it's getting more and more complicated. Kubuntu 16.04 is even worse in this context. One error message that often comes back sounds something like "mtp protocol died unexpectedly. Today, I got this error message: *Internal Error* *Please send a full bug report at http://bugs.kde.org * *No such object path '/modules/kdeconnect/devices/ed509789b5640fb9/sftp'* Also this one shows up from time to time.... The only way out I have found so far is taking out the SD card of the phone, putting it in a bigger SD card case or into some USB device, after which I can access the card. However, this is a bit troublesome. Any clue how to solve these problems? Yours. Bas G. Roufs. -- Bas G. Roufs Utrecht, NL, E. Good question Dave. Have been using different cables over the years, with different results....... > The one that came with my Motorola G3 really does only charge - I can't > get any data connection with it. Other cables work perfectly. Dragging > down from the top of the G3 screen gives me the USB options to transfer > files etc. which mounts both internal and SD storage without doing > anything else or installing anything. Will buy later another data cable, try it and report my findings here. Yours. Bas G. Roufs. > > Dave -- Bas G. Roufs Van 't Hoffstraat 1 NL- 3514 VT Utrecht BasRoufs at gmail.com +31 6 446 835 10
