OK, then my assumption of the missing file association was wrong. I'm 
glad you found the solution.

If that's the same problem I found a long time ago with tooltips, this 
would fix it: Start systemsettings, go to "Application Appearence" -> 
"GTK". Change the selection for GTK3 Theme from oxygen-gtk to something 
else and click the "Apply" button.

I think the second line should be "Advanced options for Ubuntu" where 
you can select all the kernels installed on your system. And as long as 
those -pae kernels are installed, you can select them.
