Showing applications on the panel

I would like open applications to appear on the bottom panel the next 
time that the computer is booted. This has always been the case for me, 
if I remember correctly, ever since I first stated using the KDE desktop 
in 1995.

Version 16.04 is a fresh installation on this particular computer and so 
far I have not discovered how to add an application the the panel. Is 
there a method or is this just the way things are now?
