This mirrors my experience on one machine (an acer aspire one) where I
installed 16.04 form scratch, while on my main laptop (upgraded from 15
something) the upgrade button worked.

IIRC when I upgraded to 16.04 (or was it 15 something? I'm not really
sure) I had a similar issue: the system didn't automatically install
sddm but left the previous, non-functional, display manager.

No problem[*] here with nvidia, but I had manually installed nvidia-367
prior to the upgrade (in fact I had it installed for a long time).
I know for a fact that it wouldn't automatically upgrade to that version
in 16.04.

[*] apart from some visual artifacts with compositing enabled and some
missing/incomplete letters on the lock screen, but those problems have
always been there.
