Will not complete login after update

It might be your graphics driver.  
When booting choose the recovery option in the grub menu.  If you usually don't see it then keep the shift key pressed when you turn on the computer to show it.
Then enable networking and drop to a root shell. you can then follow Myriam's suggestion. But remember you are already root and you NEVER use the 'sudo' command as root.

Had this same problem with the 16.04 beta and that was how I fixed it.
