Desktop Icons Have No Text Labels

[ Kubuntu 16.04 LTS ]

Say I create a text file in my home directory using 'kate' named "foobar".

Then I open my home directory using 'dolphin'. After locating the newly
created text file in the 'dolphin' window, I "drag" the text file's icon to
the desktop.

Choosing the "icon" option, the icon appears but without any label, just
the icon itself. If I "hover" the cursor over the icon, the name "foobar"
appears. But the text is not on the icon itself.

How can I get text displayed with/on the icon so that I can determine
visually which of possibly many icons on the desktop I might want to open?

Thanks for your ideas!
