14.04 to 16.04 -- upgrade or not?

For what it's worth I tried to upgrade 2 machines, 1 virtual under
Virtualbox and one on real hardware. Both failed and left me with
un-usable machines.As these were not vital systems (I run Debian Jessie
for reliability) I propose to re-install from scratch.
