I and my wife use Digikam heavily and must have over 20,000 pictures within it.  I don't use it for photo changes much but I haven't really explored it that much.  Gimp will do a lot of photo editing and is pretty powerful but might be hard to get used to/learn.  For RAW photo processing I use AfterShot Pro which is very good former the money spent.   

I turned off my OS/2 machine somewhere around year 2000 and haven't looked back.
