If you're running KDE, you should be able to highlight the URL, do a CTRL-C, then right click an open area of your desktop, select "Create new" name it --"Weather"--then snap on "Link to Location" and it will place an icon on your desktop. At least that's the way it works on PCLOS and Mint, and Mint is a direct descendent of Ubuntu. I don't know how you turn an icon into a widget, or if it's possible, but I think they can coexist. --doug From bullet at ballmail.co.za Tue Apr 5 10:27:17 2016 From: bullet at ballmail.co.za (vincent) Date: Tue, 05 Apr 2016 12:27:17 +0200 Subject: Akonadi Send Later Agent not sending later? I select the "send later via" button and then select the "Delay" option and choose a date & time, then select "Send Later" at the bottom of the box. This sends the message to Drafts and this is where it sits, not moving at the appointed time. I can't find anything with google regarding the agent, other than the handbook, which doesn't troubleshoot. Any help would be appreciated on this. If if can, it's far short of the ease of PMView for that task. The main thing other than PMView I miss in Linux is XFile, a far better file picker than anything I've seen in Linux, automatically providing one click or less access to recents for both directories and files as well as favorite dirs, and automatically remembering by app the last used dir. It's too bad PMView used its own light table picker instead. It isn't nearly as handy. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." It is still said that OpenOffice will open some formats correctly while LibreOffice will fail. This is what Mark Shuttleworth is said to have mentioned on the topic: "Shuttleworth has a fairly serious disagreement with how the OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice split came about. He said that Sun made a $100 million "gift" to the community when it opened up the OpenOffice code. But a "radical faction" made the lives of the OpenOffice developers "hell" by refusing to contribute code under the Sun agreement. That eventually led to the split, but furthermore led Oracle to finally decide to stop OpenOffice development and lay off 100 employees. He contends that the pace of development for LibreOffice is not keeping up with what OpenOffice was able to achieve and wonders if OpenOffice would have been better off if the "factionalists" hadn't won." https://lwn.net/Articles/442782/ So I just want to say here: if you first sabotage your competing product, and then claim that yours is developing faster, you're not really being honest about any of this. It appears as though OpenOffice was simply sabotaged because a group of developers refused to contribute to it. Meanwhile, due to licenses, LibreOffice was able to steal code from OO.org, but not the other way around. I think it has been a ghastly thing and I think LibreOffice exists for no other reason than that it has a "better license" which matters apparently to Open Source enthusiasts but not really not anyone else. Not saying if OpenOffice is still better or is "betterly" developed but the mindset that took over and created LibreOffice was and still is not very consumer-oriented, and the people that laud its superiority are usually just full of shit. It's not about the end user for the largest part. At the same time I cannot even get OpenOffice to "install" itself into my KDE menu now, so I am using LibreOffice for convenience. However if you need it for a simple one-time task, there is no hurt in installing OpenOffice as well, you may just need to run it from the command line or something. My name is Tony. I'm interested in contributing to the KDE/Kubuntu community. I don't have any mad coding skills, but I enjoy doing graphic design and UI design. I'd love to contribute in that regard. Well, I recently installed Kubuntu 16.04, and I noticed an issue that it introduced. In 15.10, KDE Connect was flawless. In 16.04, notifications don't pop up (I can still see them if I click on the icon in the taskbar) and the remote input is sluggish and delayed. Remote input is, in fact, unusable. Are there plans to fix this, and has anyone filed a bug report on this? But I think you should first try the live iso image and find out if you really like the new appearence. And if you decide to do the upgrade, you should also check the release notes for both Kubuntu [2] and Ubuntu [3], especially the sections about known problems. In such circumstances I tend to do a fresh installation after a full backup of the previous system's important files (/home and /etc, mostly), then copy back what is needed from the user perspective. Even if you use a separate partition for your /home, you should be aware of the system change (Qt 4 -> Qt5, KDE 4.x -> Plasma 5.x) which implies quite a few things can go wrong. Since I have enough space on my hard disk, I first tested 16.04 in a virtual installation when it was still beta, and when it was released I made a second installation on a fresh partition. This needs a few adjustments for the startup menu, so maybe not the easiest approach, but at least I am on the safe side :-) Hope this helps. You should first make a backup (including "/etc"). Then during the installation you should select manual partitioning. For "/" select the partition you are using now and select the current file system. Furthermore make sure that the partition is NOT set to be formatted. This will preserve "/home" and I think also "/usr/local". I first tried kdenlive but it froze the moment I started playing the video. It is just an mp4 from YT @ 720p. Then I tried Openshot. It kept crashing for a while but eventually I learned how to rudimentary reduce the video to a small section. But, then when I exported it, it had cut off like the last second or the last few frames and the audio of the clip (as well as the video, but audio was more important in this case) didn't complete. So I look at a guy writing about Linux software and he tries a lot of programs but ends up with Blender. Now Blender is a ray tracer. But it has a video editing mode. But the interface is really hard to learn, or rather it requires learning. When I finally found out how to get a view of the filesystem, it seems as though I needed to previously set up the folders I could use, which means setting up your project in advance. Then I just gave up, I did not want to learn how to set up a project just to be able to import a video file into it. Is there anything in Linux you can actually use? It seems Blender is the best but it has a steep learning curve and it is not a simple tool. On Windows I used to use Gordian Knot (mostly for MKV files) it is not great and not a real editor but it (sometimes) did what it needed to do. Now I am at a loss because the only thing I can really try is Lightworks. Regards, Xen. You can still get it from the Avidemux HP (that will require compiling it though) or from the getdep repo http://www.getdeb.net (I used to get mine from there anyway since the official versions were pretty dated usually). That will require you to add the getdeb repos though. Not sure if you are comfortable with that, they do have a good explanation for the process here: http://www.getdeb.net/updates/Ubuntu/16.04#how_to_install . It's easy enough if you simply use their getdeb package. It remains an unofficial repository though, keep that in mind. The only way I could install avidemux was by adding: deb http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu wily main multiverse to sources.list. otherwise it is manual dependency hunting, not fun. avidemux2_qt4 crashes while opening a file or trying to open a file open dialog. The (gtk) tooltips are unreadable on KDE in Kubuntu 16.04. (plasma5). I cannot simply save the file because the first frame I need is not a keyframe. I may need to encode, but..... there are very few codecs available and when I try one (just configure) the program segfaults. Realized I must have made a mistake when using the "getdeb" system. Since apt list avidemux* doesn't work if you have avidemux* files in the directory, but you may not notice that, you have to use "apt list "avidemux*"" with quotes. Real nice. If you added the getdeb repos you should be able to simply do: sudo apt-get install avidemux2.6-qt ... at least that worked for me. You did remember to update the sources first (sudo apt-get update)? Just checked again on a virtual machine with a fresh install of xenial and it worked fine. I don't have problems with missing dependencies or the qt version crashing, though I would bet the latter is connected to adding some wily libs to the mix. The GTK settings can be tweaked in system settings -> application styles, it's limited but might help with those tooltips. You should always really have an external drive and install grub on it. This is as simple as loading any random USB stick and doing: grub-install /dev/sdb on it if the usb is sdb. If you have that grub somewhere (not the boot menu and the boot files, those are still on your harddisk, it is just the code in the master boot sector) you can always boot back into your system. Once you are booted you can reinstall grub by running grub-install again or maybe even update-grub. Once you know that there is really not any issue. good luck. ps. the windows 10 upgrade will just move your old windows 7 files out of the way, keep your users and user data, and create a new windows and possibly, program files tree. It's an "in place" upgrade for the most part. When I did the upgrade, I found that Windows had made the two Linux partitions into one big unallocated one! For some reason, it left the swap partition (sda8) alone. On another machine, It upgraded Win7 to Win 10 without damaging the Linux partitions. Of course I had to recreate the dual-boot login. Finally, altho I very seldom boot into Windows, I was trying to get a B-size scanner to work, so I tried installing what I believed was the proper driver for it in Windows, and then found out that I could no longer use the LAN, gt mail, etc. I tried very hard to repair Windows, but I could not, and the downloaded Windows disk which I tried to install would not, altho it tried to more or less of an extent on several attempts. As a result i no longer have any way of running Windows 10 on that machine, and probably could not reinstall any earlier version, because they were all upgrades, one at a time, over the years, from XP, and MS will not let you do a fresh install of an upgraded system that you might have on a disk. So, unless I want to buy a new Windows disk, I will have no Windows on that machine. Not only that, I was advised on a forum that a possible reason that Win 10 would not reinstall is that the drivers in it are not compatible with my 5-year-old MOBO. (When it was upgrading, the old drivers were still in place.) So even if I bought a new Windows, it might not install! As far as windows is concerned there is nothing free. In fact everyone I know who has tried to install the free upgrade has hosed their working systems. Anyway, I would suggest to add another user to your system and try if it works if you login as that other user. If that is the case, there is a problem with a file in your $HOME folder, maybe a config file or a data file which stores data for the application which crashes.
