I wouldn't be surprised since Ubuntu seems to be going in their own direction now and do not seem to want to support Wayland.  That causes problems for all derivatives not just Kubuntu.

KDE is not having problems, Kubuntu was always the blue-haired stepchild and Johnathan Riddell (the guy who started Kubuntu) being forced to resign from the Kubuntu leadership seems to have caused irreparable harm and deep seated distrust.
