Provided your workspace layout is set to desktop (that's the default): 
Right-click on the desktop and select "Unlock Widgets" if necessary. 
Open your file manager, navigate to the directory where you find the 
item you want to see on the desktop. Drag the item to the desktop and 
select "Icon".
