With HDMI, it may be tricky depending on the video card and the driver used. 
Most all will support audio output using the hdmi, but a few may require the 
non-free proprietary drivers (nvidia and amd). With the cable plugged in, 
check out System Settings >> Multimedia, and check that the hdmi output is 
visible, and is moved to the top of the  list in the appropriate sections.

Another thing to try to test (assuming that hdmi audio is available and 
present) is, when playing a video or audio piece, is to click on your kmix 
icon in the system tray. You can right-click on the output stream for the 
audio/video, and select "move" to send it to a different output device, to see 
if it plays where you want it to.
