Unless you have set up a MySQL database on  your own, kdepim uses a small, 
internal MySQL . The kdepim developers would need to add or switch to a 
different internal database, and I don't see any evidence on that with my own 
lazy research.

If one does want to use a full-on MySQL or MariaDB, I believe that the latter 
is still a drop-in replacement for the former, so in theory it should be 
simple to do. However, i do  not believe many desktop users would want the 
overhead running such a database would add.
