Hey, thanks for pointing this out. I used to use this all the time with KDE 3, and really missed it in KDE 4. I'll have to use it some and see if it works for me now. The general problem is the one you noticed. This is a KDE widget and will not work with everything. The KDE 3 version only worked with KDE. This new one seems better than that. For my quick trial it worked with Firefox, Chrome and Thunderbird as will. There will be programs that it just doesn't work with and I don't think there is anything that the KDE developers can do about it. Given that it works with some non-KDE applications, there must be a standard that they are conforming to. The best we can hope for is for the non-working applications to switch to following the standard. You might ask them if they have plans to do so. Thanks for pointing it out to me, Michael From kbun at xpresso.seaslug.org Tue Feb 10 14:28:35 2015 From: kbun at xpresso.seaslug.org (Bill Vance) Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2015 06:28:35 -0800 (PST) Subject: Linux tricks Message-ID: I've come across a compendium, a treasure chest, a veritable cornucopia, of Linux tricks and tips, and so, I just have to dump it into your laps.....:-) www.tuxradar.com/content/command-line-tricks-smart-geeks www.tuxradar.com/content/linux-tips-every-geek-should-know www.tuxradar.com/content/more-linux-tips-every-geek-should-know www.tuxradar.com/content/bash-tips-power-users www.tuxradar.com/content/master-linux-command-line The above are courtesy of, "Linux Format", and they seem to be just the tip of the iceberg. The kdepim developers would need to add or switch to a different internal database, and I don't see any evidence on that with my own lazy research. If one does want to use a full-on MySQL or MariaDB, I believe that the latter is still a drop-in replacement for the former, so in theory it should be simple to do. However, i do not believe many desktop users would want the overhead running such a database would add. -- Clay Weber https://kubuntuforums.net http://kubuntu.org http://claydoh.com From frankie-1 at hotmail.nl Mon Feb 16 13:14:10 2015 From: frankie-1 at hotmail.nl (Dennis M) Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2015 14:14:10 +0100 Subject: Thunderbird e-mail problems Ubuntu Message-ID: Hello, my uncle uses Ubuntu 14.04 lts, he uses Thunderbird e-mail who can't receive mail but sending is good. At least update manager does tell me updates are available. Whether it will actually do them is questionable. The Muon package manager is a joke. It can't find half what's available on the repos. SO, the first thing I do when installing Kubuntu from scratch is install Synaptic package handler. My system has been reverted to the old style menu so if you wish to do the same right click on the big blue "K" button and click old style. If your using the new menu you will have to search the menu's for "Konsole". Click the big blue button scroll down to System - click look for "Konsole(Terminal)" - click "Copy" the line below and "paste" into the resulting window sudo apt-get install synaptic hit enter or return key type in password - enter I believe it asks something - type "y" [ without the quotes ] and hit enter Lots of stuff scrolls past and then stops at prompt - close window You will now find Synaptic in your menu. At the top left of Synaptic window it has "Reload", "Mark All Upgrades" and "Apply". Click in that order. If you want some kind of software you can use the "Quick Filter" to search for whatever by keywords.
