In-Reply-To: <1739708.65ncAOdDvE@viaconsensus-camino> References: <1739708.65ncAOdDvE@viaconsensus-camino> Message-ID: <1609562.O3ZDMqAfom@viaconsensus-camino> Hello Everybody. Is there anybody at this list who: ....... +... manages to somehow use some recent version of Kubuntu as as a 'host',together with some version of Android as guest? +... wants to share his or her experience here? If your answer to both questions is 'yes', please, read on. The exact version of Android is only of secondary importance to me. At this moment, I am trying 'Android 4.4. for the Eee PC Family'. However, I am happy to use any other version. The exact way to host Android is also of limited importance - at his moment, I am trying VirtualBox. However, I am also happy to use 'KDE Connect' or any other method. A few times, I fruitlessly tried to to get started with Android within VirtualBox along the lines of this manual: > http://www.howtogeek.com/164570/how-to-install-android-in-virtualbox/ Other things possibly useful to know: * Host OS: an up-to-date Kubuntu 14.04 LTS system; * Guest OS tried so far: Android 4.4. Kitkat for the 'Eee PC Family' * Hardware: Asus Eee PC Flare series, 4 GB RAM, 1.6 Ghz processor, 320 GB HD. So far, I have been using a few strategies. First of all, I simply have been following the standard path way I usually follow inside Android: early log-in into my gmail account. Additionally, I have skipped the login in the early phase; by choosing a 'not now' option, I do manage to get into the Android system and even to prevent that platform from 'sleeping'. However, both strategies fail in the end as soon as I try to sign into my Gmail account. One persistent problem prevents me from doing anything beyond the sign-in moment. I simply do not manage to transfer the WIFI connection I am using, to the virtual Android system - this prevents me from using 'Google Play' - the app repository of Google. Both Kubuntu and VB do detect the (WIFI) internet connection I am using, however, Android not. According to the manual at 'Howtogeek', the internet connection should also work by simply skipping the WIFI turn-on option in Android - however, this is not the case. At this point, a few questions spring to my mind. Is there anything else I can do to go beyond this deadlock? Secondly, take a look at the hardware specs I have summarised above. Is 'Virtual Box' at all possible at such a machine? Is it perhaps better to install Android at one of the empty partitions at my machine? Finally for now - so far, I have been trying this version: Android 4.4. Kitkat for the 'Eee PC Family'. However, I am happy to use any other recent version instead. Thanks for considering my questions. Have a nice day. Respectfully Yours, Bas G. Roufs. ======================================== Bas G. Roufs Utrecht, NL, EU. Are you wanting to run Android as a desktop OS, or are you looking for a testing/development environment? Without any links to what image file you are using or to the instructions you used to set up and install it, can I guess from " Android 4.4. Kitkat for the 'Eee PC Family" that you are using an image from the android-x86 project? http://www.android-x86.org/ As you are using a eee-pc, have you considered installing the OS directly to an sdcard and booting from that, or trying a newer iso image, which seems to no longer need a special build for individual computers any longer? http://www.android-x86.org/releases/releasenote-4-4-r3. You might simply just need to adjust the virtual machine's network card type and/or setting it to "bridged" mode. Though you email Valorie and I instead of the kubuntu-users mailing list, that's ok :) On IRC we use "nicknames" ex. mine is ahoneybun in #kubuntu-devel, and all others I'm in. Quassel will work just fine at the end of the day it is up to you what tools to use with IRC or anything in Kubuntu. You can introduce yourself to the mailing list, kubuntu-users and kubuntu-devels I believe. The IRC rooms are: - #kubuntu for support to Kubuntu users - #kubuntu-devel for development of Kubuntu For Documentation we are using the userbase at kde here: https://userbase.kde.org/Kubuntu and errors, ideas, or typos are more then welcomed :) For testing and packaging you can join in #kubuntu-devel as we are doing all that in there. And last but very much important, YES you can be of help to our wonderful community! Maybe you are suffering from using a card with defective driver >> support? > No I did not replace anything because I need someone to tell me what to That's a tricky thing to try to do. First we need to know if your 6200 is part of the motherboard or is a separate card similar to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125402 If not a separate card, then we need to know if the motherboard has a slot designed specifically for a separate video card. Given the age of the 6200, a slot if present would most likely be of PCI Express 16X type. If there is no PCI Express slot, then you would need a PCI type, and of course an empty slot to put it in. To put a card in a slot requires knowing the approximate size of the computer case. If it's around 4" or so thick, you would need a low profile type. If it's around 5" or more, and standard type would be needed. Many lower priced cards come with both brackets so that they can fit either case type. Usually changing the bracket is a simple matter of two screws. Once all the above is accounted for, it becomes a matter of choosing your poison. There really are too many choices. Odds are the one linked to above would work for you. Read the reviews on it. If the low ones bother you more than the good ones please you, choose another according to what you are comfortable spending, and read its reviews the same way. Odds are whatever is available locally at Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot or WalMart would work equally well. All should be at least 5 years newer than your 6200. To maximize the possibility that whatever you choose will work in Kubuntu 15.04 with the least amount of fuss, make sure it's not a model less than a year or two old, and make sure it has an NVidia (aka GeForce) video chip, so that it should work immediately with the already installed nouveau driver in the XFCE you already have installed. Sites like the following should help you decide if you want more info than above: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/116598/how-to-select-which-graphics-card-to-use http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/9553/how-do-i-choose-a-graphics-card-for-linux http://www.tuxradar.com/answers/513 http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2080267/graphic-card-vendor-linux.html http://www.currentbuild.com/video-card.php My personal choice is ATI/AMD over NVidia, because the ATI/AMD FOSS driver seems to be less often troublesome than nouveau, whereas more NVidia users on Linux prefer using proprietary drivers. Also I don't use puters for games. > replace it with. I am in Newton County, GA On Ga highway 212 2 miles > west of the intersection of 212 and 162. Just above the Henry County line. The GA line is at least 250 miles from here, so not doable for me. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." That motherboard's onboard video is weakly suppored VIA Unichrome, while its video card slot is AGP, which offers a seriously poorer selection of suitable card choices. AFAICT, everything that old is beyond decent driver support. It's probably time to consider a new motherboard or PC. If you can find a Radeon 9500 on eBay for $20 or so you might get lucky. A newer PCI card than the 6200 might be a better bet if your budget won't allow the more serious upgrade of motherboard or PC. eBay should still have a good selection of socket 775 motherboards that will provide a PCI Express slot and/or decently supported onboard Intel video, and take your old CPU and RAM. Among candidates are http://www.ebay.com/itm/181832092457 and http://www.ebay.com/itm/271104327782 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128536 would take your old CPU, but you would need new RAM, and get a faster PC without spending more than you would for a mid-level video card, if you could even find one suitable for AGP or PCI. It uses the same chipset as on a PC I have here that works fine with Kubuntu 14.10, openSUSE Tumbleweed and 13.2, Mageia 5 and Fedora 22 and 23. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." It looks to me like NVidia GeForce 6200 is the more likely root of his video trouble, which could be complicated by the entry level/weakly supported VIA chipset on his Biostar P4M800 Pro-M7 motherboard. http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=94 > I don't know how to "restart" an upgrade, maybe someone else does? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." GeForce is a name used for cards that use NVidia chips, so distinguishing between your two cards with the sketchy info above is little use. Kernel Module 304.125 tells us the driver installed, not the chip used on the video card. Output from lspci is what we need for that, but I think what you last gave us is what you are using now, 01:00.0 VGAcompatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1). That driver may be your problem. Proprietary kernel modules have to be correctly chosen for the chips they work with. They make video card swaps problematic for those unfamiliar with procedures required at upgrade and/or replacement time. Your upgrade may have mishandled having had a proprietary NVidia driver installed. Eradicating the proprietary software may allow you to get past your video trouble, and if not, another upgrade install may work once the proprietary software is gone. Something else to consider: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA7RB2VM9342 I have one of these working nicely with openSUSE Linux and KDE5 multibooting with Win7 on a 750GB HD. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Of those electrolytic caps located between the CPU and the red riser for the parport etc output at the rear of the board, have any of them a bulged or even split/cracked at the score in the alu top? If so, the lot of them should be replaced with low ESR 105C rated capacitors of the same capacity and voltage rating. Having lost our local parts supply dealers years ago, I get them in 10 packs from ebay these days, at prices under 2 bucks each including shipping, so the cost isn't outrageous. I also have a hot air rework station I got from ebay for less than a hundred dollar bill, but thats just a C.O.D.B to me, and not heavily used since like the OP, I'm retired and will soon be 81 yo. Motherboards can do the darnest things when those have failed by the developpment of excessive ESR = Equivalent Series Resistance. As a C.E.T., and a long time television station Chief Engineer, I have seen them so bad they can't even get past the bios screen before crashing or looping back to restart the bios. That board had 3 or the 8 showing split tops and dried white leakage that washes off with a wet q-tip or 10. I replaced all 8 of those caps most of a decade back and its still going strong & stable today. > > I don't know how to "restart" an upgrade, maybe someone else does? > > -- > "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant > words are persuasive." Possibly, but I doubt it. Most of the bad motherboard caps of the plague era were made before LGA775 was introduced. If those bigger caps are all Pansonic, Chemicon (UCC) or Rubycon, not likely caps are his problem. > Having lost our local parts supply dealers years ago, I get them in 10 > packs from ebay these days, at prices under 2 bucks each including > shipping, so the cost isn't outrageous. I looked at the installation instructions in your Email and the other instructions sent by Little Girl. I do not think I can do the Install shown in either one. I will have to wait until I feel better. I am not as mentally sharp as I was 50 years ago. I was an Ironworker for 40 years and worked with drawings every day. I will save both Emails and may try it on a better day. Or pass them on if I find a Linux Geru in this area. Thanks again to all that tried to help. If you find you need help with partitioning you should start a new thread that includes output from 'fdisk -l' and explain what you hope to accomplish by changing your partitioning. Much like installing a proprietary, repartitioning an already used HD provides plenty potential to cause grief if you aren't prepared in advance with restorable backups of important user data, itself often a subject of considerable consternation. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." So the only current problem with 15.04 now is screen display is bad, but it does boot, right? If that is true, then it should be repairable, not in need of reinstallation. Even if you reinstall 15.04, odds are that the nouveau driver isn't working for your 6200 and you need the proprietary driver to solve the display problem. Repairs regarding NVidia drivers should be made from a virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-Fn), not from KDE or XFCE. The GUI display manager should be shut down before installing or removing the 304.125 or any other NVidia driver, as stated in instructions for installing it. Part of getting the NVidia driver properly installed is to adjust your Grub configuration so that nomodeset is included on the cmdline. Another part is installing the kernel source for the installed kernel, which also can be done from a virtual terminal using aptitude or apt-get. A read of https://elementaryforums.com/index.php?threads/howto-install-latest-nvidia-driver-on-linux-without-getting-black-screen.7/ might enable you to get the proprietary driver installed without help. If not, maybe you could find a local Linux guru or user group to help you by placing a Craigslist ad. Maybe there is a local seniors or church group that could help. At this point, if 15.04 boots and only its video is corrupt, altering your partitioning is probably not warranted, a waste of time, and maybe detrimental to progress. You should upload /var/log/Xorg.0.log from each of your good and your bad Kubuntus to pastebin so that we can compare them and know better how to suggest you proceed. http://paste.ubuntu.com/ -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." If not, you could install fresh without, disturbing anything else, to the space Windows now occupies, but this is better tried only if you first tell us which partition or partitions contain /home(s). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." HPLIP opens regularly from the KDE menu - if system turns off monitor (after some idle time), it isn't able to turn on again the monitor, it remain blank: I disabled this command to avoid this (hope temporarily) problem Does anyone have some hints for them? No, it would be the log from the good Kubuntu you are booted to, and the log on the other Kubuntu in its /var/log/ directory, which you should be able to access by temporarily mounting it to /mnt/ if it is not already mounted. > Open it in Kate and past in above? The fdisk -l output you previously provided would have had errors to report if it was a significant problem. They won't make Richard's 160GB and 80GB HDs slow. The alignment warnings he saw are almost certainly about deviation from mainstream BIOS HD partitioning conventions, less likely not leaving 1MiB of unpartitioned space at the start of each HD as has become customary to leave room for more boot code than fits in the MBR sector. > And I am glad somebody has finally made a disk partitioner (besides > GParted) aware of this. Absence of /etc/X11/xorg.conf here probably means the nvidia driver never got installed on the installation on the partition containing this location. Installations using FOSS drivers usually need no /etx/X11/xorg.conf file. It seems as though you managed to get 15.04 installed and are using it to post to all these mailing list threads you created, but you've reported video trouble only on the "newer" of two installations. It's hard to make sense of what happened, but it seems like you're trying to fix something that isn't broken, maybe as a result of a confusing boot (Grub2) menu. You should have at least two different grub.cfg files one at least on each HD. If we saw both on pastebin and knew which came from which partitions we might be able to tell what happened, but I'm not sure it would matter. What's the output of 'grep VER /etc/os-release' on your working OK Kubuntu installation? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I am Emailing with Xfce. The working Log I sent is from Xfce. I will try to get a log from the non loading Kubuntu. It comes up on the Password page drop down as Plasma. I can enter a password and it accepts it and go to a blank screen. If some one could wzalk me throgh deleting and renameing partitions I would delete the version 15.04 of Kubuntu and install 14.xx for now and try again when the new 15.xx come out in a month or two. I hope what I have sent now will give you a clue as to what I should do. If yo need anything else please let me know . I think I have figure out how to send these files. XFCE on Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid), apparently, which output from the following would confirm. >> What's the output of 'grep VER /etc/os-release' on your working OK Kubuntu >> installation? > I am Emailing with Xfce. The working Log I sent is from Xfce. I will > try to get a log from the non loading Kubuntu. > It comes up on the Password page drop down as Plasma. I can enter a > password and it accepts it and go to a blank screen. Likely this means you have Plasma installed, but something is missing. Repairing the Plasma installation makes more sense to me, which would leave you with a still working XFCE from which to perform repairs. Probably start with this either on a vtty login or an XFCE terminal login: sudo apt-get install -f --reinstall plasma-workspace Then log out of XFCE and try to login to a Plasma session. If that fails to produce improvement, go back to an XFCE session terminal or a vtty and try: sudo apt-get install -f --reinstall kubuntu-desktop. If that produces an error about not being installed already, do: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. If none of the above get a working Plasma Desktop, I wouldn't expect another 15.04 installation to be helpful. > If some one could wzalk me throgh deleting and renameing partitions I > would delete the version 15.04 of Kubuntu and install 14.xx for now and > try again when the new 15.xx come out in a month or two. Probably better to forget about the other installation for the moment, and forget about partitioning unless the repair process fails. The existing partitions won't need to be deleted. All that will be necessary to try to install 14.10 will be to ensure it gets installed to the currently broken / partition. It should be installed with its bootloader on its / partition instead of the MBR. Then when its installation is done, update-grub can be run from 15.04 to add 14.10 to the 15.04 boot menu. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I've a 2TB external hdd, and after havin replaced the external case with another identical (Hamlet HXD3CCUU) my hard disk is no more showing up in the device list. After a little analysis I found that the partition table seems to be totally missing, and while I'm sure the disk has a single MBR partition for the entire size, parted shows: Model: ST2000DM 001-1CH164 (scsi) Disk /dev/sdc: 2000GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: msdos Disk Flags: Number Start End Size Type File system Flags 1 131kB 236GB 236GB primary So it seems the whole partition has been resized. I suspect there is some sligthly difference between the two controllers of the cases that causes the problem, but how can I fix it without loosing data? I have backups, but I've also some live data I would not loose! What if I resize the 1 partition to the very end of the disk? Any suggestion and/or explaination? I've used testdisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk to automate the process as much as possible. Evidently Xfce is using the NVida because it shows up in XVida. The drivers in Kubuntu 15.10 read-- Using x.org xserver Nouveau Display Driver from xserver-xorg-video-microcode-- I have had to download some programs that did not carry over. Version is 15.10, just before the beta. I have tried both from Kubuntu Live DVD (that installed the system) and from OpenSUSE 13.2 installation. I get the error: chroot: failed to run command ‘/bin/bash’: Permission denied Actually any command executed by way of the chroot will fail: chroot: failed to run command ‘/bin/true’: Permission denied The volume is mounted without any noexec or user: /dev/mapper/linux-kubuntu on /mounts/kubuntu type ext3 (rw,relatime,stripe=16,data=ordered) I can chroot fine into the OpenSUSE installation, even from the Kubuntu Live DVD. The mount is a thin-provisioned volume. That is the reason I need to chroot into it, because Kubuntu won't start. For a test I am copying the installation to another partition outside of any LVM. It is a primary partition. The same problem, so it can't be related to LVM or thin. What is the problem here? Why can't I chroot into that Kubuntu install?. Regards, B. From list at xenhideout.nl Fri Aug 28 19:38:09 2015 From: list at xenhideout.nl (Xen) Date: Fri, 28 Aug 2015 21:38:09 +0200 (CEST) Subject: 15.10 fails to boot thin-LVM Message-ID: I have a 15.10 install that I copied onto a thinly provisioned LVM. After this change, the system wouldn't boot anymore. I'm not sure about the exact error messages at this point, but suffice to say for now that there were errors about the thin-volumes not being able to be loaded. This may actually have to do with the package thin-provisioning-tools not being installed by default, or not being included in the initrd. I can't regen my initrd at this point due to the other problem of not being able to chroot into my install. I will have to boot it from a regular partition, try to regen the initrd (how can I do that if it won't know I'll need it?) and then boot from there when the thing is copied back onto the thin. It is because activating a thin-volume will try to use thin_check and if it's not there, it will fail :(. A pretty bad dependency, I must say. But it's the same as cryptsetup... I think it really needs thin_check in the initrd to even begin loading the volumes. Does anyone have a recipe for getting this working? I can - boot the system from a regular partition - install the package from there - - regenerate the initrd and install it What is the third step? Will it work automatically? Do I need to provide a hook for initramfs-tools or something?. Regards, Bart ps. I would also suggest to add thin-provisioning-tools to the base image of Kubuntu. https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib/issues/50 From buzzmandt at gmail.com Sat Aug 29 23:09:57 2015 From: buzzmandt at gmail.com (Dale Trombley) Date: Sat, 29 Aug 2015 19:09:57 -0400 Subject: kubuntu 15.10 right click kills dolphin Message-ID: for the past several updates (am current up to date rtm) dolphin dies when i right click on any file. The first Linux installed on this computer was Kubuntu 15.05 But because It cause me a few problems I downgraded to 14.10 which worked perfectly. The sound card is a Realtek on-board chip. The only solution that I can see is to go back to 14.10 and hope that the previous problems with 15.04 will be resolved in 15.10. I'd rather not have to do that. Can anyone offer a solution? By the way, I tried Mate KDE 17.3 but because it's built on 14.04 the result is, of course, the same. You want to install the LTS enablement stack. It seems to me that your problem is with the Kernel support rather than the ALSA system. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack I'm running the (even newer) 4.2 kernels from kernel.ubuntu.com because with v4 and later there where major improvements with the Toshiba hardware/firmware support and with ATI/AMD driver support for the opensource ATI/AMD chipsets. You can download newer kernels from kernel.ubuntu.com Your mileage may vary. Make sure you have good backups, but when a Kernel has not worked, I have always been able to go back to an older kernel through the bootloaders 'Advanced' menu. Good luck.
