I guess most of us say "clean install first of all"

but I also have an older laptop that works but have hardware issues
such as dead usb ports, battery long gone and so on. So in short it
happens.

Then again it could be software. The older laptop is on 12.04 and
unless I am somehow forced to I am not going to upgrade. The newer one
is now on 14.04 with latest KDE and though everything works
"something" is heating it up more than what it used to.

And the last time the frigging "hybrid" Intel/AMD graphics worked as
it should was on 12.10 if I remember correctly, meaning when I could
use the proprieat blob from AMD. Since then the best I can do is to
kill off the AMD at boot with vgaswitcheroo.

That was somehow killed off after kernel 3.12 so I run kernel 3.12
despite being 14.04 that use 3.13

There are times when Linux is almost as demanding from the user as
Windows XP
