Loss of bootable disk after dist-upgrade

Just a heads-up in case anyone else hits this problem. I upgraded my
laptop from 14.04 to 14.10 today and ended up with "no bootable disc" at
the restart. I suspect an EFI/secure boot issue that I'll diagnose and
fix sometime soon, but I thought I ought to flag it up in case any other
upgraders are troubled by it. Fore warned is fore armed!
