Don't expect it to get better until you get it to stop using VESA. Did you
try replacing the 311 driver with 304 yet? If you have done that and did not
get 1680x1050 as a result, maybe it would be better to try uninstalling
Nvidia and trying to get Nouveau to work. Here's what Xorg.0.log looks like
on 14.10 here using Nouveau (and a moderately newer than your NV44A [GeForce
6200], G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] gfxchip):

Note that it contains no instances of the string "VESA(0)", and many of
"NOUVEAU(0)".

Something else to try if you can is to switch cable types. If now VGA, try
DVI. If now DVI, try VGA. Try to borrow the other type if you don't have it,
just to test.

Even though in 14.04 it worked for you, regressions do sometimes happen with
support for older hardware.

As long as VESA is in use, you cannot expect 1680x1050.

After this finally is fixed, consider not "upgrading" next time a new version
is released. Instead, create a multiboot installation, where you can keep
using what works until you can get the bugs out of what's new, and have the
old to fall back on easier than live media if something breaks. You can have
more than two installations, using extras e.g. to participate in testing
betas, and finding problems like this before they are unleashed via GA on the
unsuspecting.
