The need to disable KMS may have become obsolete, or depend on chip as you
suggest, but it has been a requirement in the past. ISTR kernel devs
mentioning something about automatic disabling whenever a gfxchip lacking a
KMS driver was found. Last machine I installed Nvidia on was not mine, so I
don't have it here to check. I only use FOSS drivers here, and last I checked
have needed to disable KMS via nomodeset only for MGA and SIS drivers.
