cannot update from 13.10 to 14.04

Mine is an AMD Sempron 2800+, and 14.04 wouldn't boot after upgrading
with apt-get, Muon updater, or installing from DVD.  14.04.01, Using
whichever method, locks the machine into an unacceptable screen
resolution, requiring an electron microscope just to read the text.

On top of that, nothing, (that I've tried), in system settings works.
Phonon doesn't work, it wont give me the number of desktops I want,
and trying to adjust the screen resolution just results in a blank
screen, rendering all that upgrade/install work useless.  The
install disk software locks me into the same above mentioned useless
screen resolution, so the process sucks from start to finish.

My luck, it'll be about 50 years before they get 14.04 whipped into
useful shape.  :-/
