I finally decided to bite the bullet, made some essential backups,
and re-installed the OS, (12.04).  Smplayer works, but only if I
dissable dvd menuing, which is odd, as I've never before had a
problem with it.  Vlc still likes to do it's vanishing act.

K3b is still a pain, as I have two working dvd drives, (one
inherited from a now defunct machine), and could, if k3b allowed
me to, copy directly from one drive to the other.
