Well, I tried that and it was not the issue at all; in fact, it made
things worse so I switched back to Nouveau. The open source driver seems
to work better with my old 9800GT card. I don't get the use of all the
fancy NVidia "tweak" software, but it does the job.

Nah, it's all about "move fast and break things" now. =)
I feel most Debian based distros seem to be pretty stable anyway,
especially forks of Ubuntu.
