It's interesting that yours is in your home directory. Mine is here:
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
And these are its active contents:
. /etc/X11/Xsession

Gremlins? I wish I could be of more help. My knowledge on this topic
is limited to what you saw in that page. If you get it working
smoothly, please let me know. I'll keep looking as well, and maybe
some kind soul who's reading along will come shed some light on this.
