Linux version for elderly slow laptop

This post is obviously not specific to Kubuntu but as I use kubuntu on my
other computers and list members have been friendly and helpful in the past
I thought I might get suggestions here.

I have one elderly slow laptop currently running Kubuntu 14.04 but I
suspect this machine might be better served with a Linux with lighter
resource demands but still with a GUI.

Suggestions please?
