No HDMI sound

No sound on HDMI seems to be a common problem however I'm sure I had 
this working in the past but it's not working now under Kububtu 14.04.

If I press the test button or the left and right speaker buttons within 
the settings menu then HDMI sound does work. Neither Dragon player nor 
VLC will output sound to the HDMI input of my TV.

Could it be that that my Radeon HD 3400 equipped laptop is not up to the 
task or should I be using some other sound controller other than Kmix?
