Hi George,
     As far as I am aware Synaptic runs fine in KDE, or it did the last 
time I used it, which was some time ago though.

     I don't use Firefox for mails, I use thunderbird, which is 
configured to top post as well, but I just cursor down the page to the 
area I want to input in, and press Enter which allows me to start typing 
at that point. I would assume Firefox is no different.
