Technically the limit numbers somewhere in the hundreds, depending on how
many HDs, SSDs and/or USB or Firewire storage devices you have installed or
available. As a practical matter it's up to the user/maintainer how many he
can cope with. I have multiple systems with more than 30 installed operating
systems, and more than one with more than 80 partitions on a single HD.

For most using Linux mostly for ordinary activies, 3 should be plenty. The
first first as first-only. The second as either a test installation, or more
likely the next version to upgrade to when you feel it's ready to be your
primary OS, at which time the first becomes a backup and repair facility. The
second becomes next in rotation as the second became, or purely for testing,
either alternative distros, or alphas and betas of some upcoming version of
your choice.
