*Sending* mail uses smtp, so you set your outgoing settings in
Kmail's Settings >> Configure Kmail >> Accounts >> Sending, using
smtp as the protocol.
I can't remember which files in ~/.kde/share/apps and
~/.kde/share/apps/config the old kmail stored its settings and account
info. Now, it is stored in a database, so it is not something you can just
copy over - the settings importer that would normally run after
upgrading was notoriously bad for many.
