It seems like the way to remove icons has changed and you can't enable
the old feature. For me it works like this: Unlock widgets, right-click
on the panel and then select "Panel Options" -> "Panel Settings". Move
the cursor over the icon you want to remove and then there should appear
an option above the icon to configure (spanner) or remove (X) the icon.
