Today's Thunderbird "update"

Following today's so-called update to Thunderbird 24.0, folders that receive
new mail no longer seem to be displayed in any manner that's obviously
different from those that don't. It used to be, until today, that folders
containing unread mail were displayed in bold, and folders that received new
mail had a different icon. The net result of this was that when one performed
a "Get Mail", it was instantly obvious which folders had received new mail.
Now all these visual indicators seem to have gone away. All that remains is
that the number of unread messages is displayed in parentheses... but that's
useless since many of my folders are for reflector traffic, and so have have
thousands of unread messages.
Has anyone figured out how to get back some semblance of the lost visual
functionailty?
(Obviously I've googled but not found anything useful; neither have I been
able to locate a Thunderbird setting that looks like it will restore the old
behaviour.)
