system incredibly slow

I can add more info: from KDE I was unable to logout, I mean using the
logout panel icon or menu icon simply did nothing (I waited for more
than 2 minutes). There's no I/O in all activities, so it seems like a
locking problem or the CPU full of some complex elaboration.
I'm now using xfce with kde applications, including kmail, and
everything is responsive again, so it seems like something broken with
my kde configuration or with the loading of the libraries.
Any idea on how to inspect?
