Q: starting second graphical interface at boot?

Looking at the startup scripts, it looks to me like kdm is designed to do
just that. in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc there is a stanza that is labeled
[X-:0-Core]. I think if you add another one labeled [X-:1-Core] you can
get a second one. You'll want to change it from the defaults, especially
#ServerVT=7
should be uncommented and changed to, say, 8.

Make sure that you are using kdm. My system defaults to lightdm. Change
this in /etc/X11/default-display-manager
