External Backup Disk Drive

My work station (Sun Ultra 20 M2) has six USB 2.0 ports. I am plugging in USB 3.0 external drive (Seagate Backup Plus). I am pretty sure it is backward compatible.
Incidentally, couple of hours back, I plugged in the same device on an identical machine (Sun Ultra 20 M2). Lo and behold, the drive was up and working in 5 minutes. I have saved the outputs from fdsik, lsusb, lsblk, tail /var/log/syslog etc
The ONLY difference is that the other machine is running kubuntu version 12.04. It certainly points to some issue with the one that I am using- kubuntu version 11.10.
I shall email copies of the command outputs tomorrow, Fri 28.
Thanks,
Ramesh
