ADDENDUM.
I forgot to mention that if you use the recent Daily releases (past
~week+) of Thunderbird 24.0a1 then it has a bug and it seems to ignore
the setting in the Contacts list of addressees and sends the mail as
HTML. So if you are using 24.0a1 switch back to TB 17.0.6 and all will
be well again.
