I have no idea what has caused the problem (well, the additional problem,
meaning that it won't stay dead).

I have consistently kept this machine absolutely vanilla, with only official
Kubuntu packages. So I am using current official Kubuntu versions of
everything. And I do not use KMail.

The only clue I can give is that it seems that as long as I keep using the
machine, akonadi stays dead, but if I leave the machine for an hour or two,
then when I return akonadi is consuming everything it can get its dirty hands on.
